Work Life Balance Brahmachara


 

Brahmacharya - Nonexcess is refraining from overindulgence with food, sleep, pleasure, and work. It is cultivating a sense of sacredness in all that you do.  © Deborah Adele

II Samuel 11:1-15, 11:26-12:13a

In the spring of the year, the time when kings go out to battle, David sent Joab with his officers and all Israel with him; they ravaged the Ammonites, and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem. It happened, late one afternoon, when David rose from his couch and was walking about on the roof of the king’s house, that he saw from the roof a woman bathing; the woman was very beautiful. David sent someone to inquire about the woman. It was reported, “This is Bathsheba daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite.” So David sent messengers to get her, and she came to him, and he lay with her. (Now she was purifying herself after her period.) Then she returned to her house. The woman conceived; and she sent and told David, “I am pregnant.” So David sent word to Joab, “Send me Uriah the Hittite.” And Joab sent Uriah to David. When Uriah came to him, David asked how Joab and the people fared, and how the war was going. Then David said to Uriah, “Go down to your house, and wash your feet.” Uriah went out of the king’s house, and there followed him a present from the king. But Uriah slept at the entrance of the king’s house with all the servants of his lord, and did not go down to his house. When they told David, “Uriah did not go down to his house,” David said to Uriah, “You have just come from a journey. Why did you not go down to your house?” Uriah said to David, “The ark and Israel and Judah remain in booths; and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord are camping in the open field; shall I then go to my house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? As you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do such a thing.” Then David said to Uriah, “Remain here today also, and tomorrow I will send you back.” So Uriah remained in Jerusalem that day. On the next day, David invited him to eat and drink in his presence and made him drunk; and in the evening he went out to lie on his couch with the servants of his lord, but he did not go down to his house. In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah. In the letter he wrote, “Set Uriah in the forefront of the hardest fighting, and then draw back from him, so that he may be struck down and die.”

When the wife of Uriah heard that her husband was dead, she made lamentation for him. When the mourning was over, David sent and brought her to his house, and she became his wife, and bore him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the Lord, and the Lord sent Nathan to David. He came to him, and said to him, “There were two men in a certain city, the one rich and the other poor. The rich man had very many flocks and herds; but the poor man had nothing but one little ewe lamb, which he had bought. He brought it up, and it grew up with him and with his children; it used to eat of his meager fare, and drink from his cup, and lie in his bosom, and it was like a daughter to him. Now there came a traveler to the rich man, and he was loath to take one of his own flock or herd to prepare for the wayfarer who had come to him, but he took the poor man’s lamb, and prepared that for the guest who had come to him.” Then David’s anger was greatly kindled against the man. He said to Nathan, “As the Lord lives, the man who has done this deserves to die; he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.” Nathan said to David, “You are the man! Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel: I anointed you king over Israel, and I rescued you from the hand of Saul; I gave you your master’s house, and your master’s wives into your bosom, and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would have added as much more. Why have you despised the word of the Lord, to do what is evil in his sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and have taken his wife to be your wife, and have killed him with the sword of the Ammonites. Now therefore the sword shall never depart from your house, for you have despised me, and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife. Thus says the Lord: I will raise up trouble against you from within your own house; and I will take your wives before your eyes, and give them to your neighbor, and he shall lie with your wives in the sight of this very sun. For you did it secretly; but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.” David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.”

 

In yoga the Yama (restraint) of Brahmacharya (nonexcess) is often misinterpreted to have strictly a sexual connotation.  And although many monks that practice yoga use this as a rule of life to remain abstinent, the average householder is called to more broadly interpret nonexcess. As stated by Deborah Adele above householders are called to “refrain from overindulgence with food, sleep, pleasure, and work.”  In modern terms have a work life balance in the most ethical of ways. Not eating too much, not sleeping too much, not working too much, and not experiencing too much pleasure.  Like Goldilocks, householders are called to find that “just right” balance of the various parts of their life.

In today’s reading we find David failing at Brahmacharya in the greatest of ways.  He sees, he desires, he takes.  He acts without regard for the consequences of his actions.  He obtains too much pleasure leading to work issues – too much work, life is just a mess. Nathan later calls him on his actions in a parable.  David realizes the error of his ways, his excess of desire and acting on the desire, and declares that he has sinned.  If we read just a little bit further, “Nathan said to David, “Now the Lord has put away your sin; you shall not die. Nevertheless, because by this deed you have utterly scorned the Lord, the child that is born to you shall die.””

David’s act of Excess (Na-Brahmacharya) means something must happen to bring balance back, in this case the child dies.  David goes on to be a great king.  The world goes on to have a New Testament and a New Covenant in which our sins are forgiven.  But this forgiveness does not relinquish our responsibility to try to live into a proper balanced life.

The Good Shepherd and Brahmacharya – Non-Excess


Last year on the Fourth Sunday of Easter I began a conversation about the Good Shepherd.  This conversation continues this year and every year on the Fourth Sunday of Easter which is always Good Shepherd Sunday:

Psalm 23

1 The Lord is my shepherd; * I shall not be in want.
2 He makes me lie down in green pastures * and leads me beside still waters.
3 He revives my soul * and guides me along right pathways for his Name's sake.
4 Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil; * for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
5 You spread a table before me in the presence of those who trouble me; * you have anointed my head with oil, and my cup is running over.
6 Surely your goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, * and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

I John 3:16-24

We know love by this, that he laid down his life for us-- and we ought to lay down our lives for one another. How does God's love abide in anyone who has the world's goods and sees a brother or sister in need and yet refuses help? Little children, let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action. And by this we will know that we are from the truth and will reassure our hearts before him whenever our hearts condemn us; for God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have boldness before God; and we receive from him whatever we ask, because we obey his commandments and do what pleases him. And this is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us. All who obey his commandments abide in him, and he abides in them. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit that he has given us.

John 10:11-19

Jesus said, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand, who is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away—and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. The hired hand runs away because a hired hand does not care for the sheep. I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it up again. I have received this command from my Father.”

 

Shepherds were often thought to be a metaphor for God or King.  But not a King of oppression. Instead, a king of love and liberty. “Jesus is talking about wise kingship, caring kingship, a king that looks like an ordinary shepherd and how that king goes about his work.” -Fr. John Herring

But if we extend this idea a little bit more then perhaps we all are called to love one another and that liberty is served for the entire earthly family. As stated in 1John, “How does God's love abide in anyone who has the world's goods and sees a brother or sister in need and yet refuses help?”  There is a vast inequity in our economic system that leaves many with nothing and a few with much more than they could ever need. Taking care of a brother or sister in need is the job of all of us, it is our duty to follow the example of the Good Shepherd. This is the yoga Yama (restraint) of Brahmacharya or Non-excess. Deborah Adele writes, “Why do we move past the place of enough into excess? Yogic thought tells us it is because our mind begins to connect certain foods or activities. There is a difference between say the body’s need to satisfy thirst and the extravagant things the mind does with this simple desire. A desire that could easily be fulfilled with a glass of water somehow, in our mind’s convoluted way, gets hooked up with memories and conditioning tied to emotional satisfaction or emotional disturbance.” We all struggle with non-excess, we all have our addictions: from the very rich to the addict to the homeless to the abuser and everyone else. We all could strive to do better.  By the grace of the Good Shepherd, I continue to try.

O God, whose Son Jesus is the good shepherd of your people: Grant that when we hear his voice we may know him who calls us each by name, and follow where he leads; who, with you and the Holy Spirit, lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. -BCP
