Tradition and Innovation

"When I had earlier heard that he [Br. Luke] was going to fulfill his ordination requirement for contextual education by taking a course on improvisational movement I was surprised.  It's not typical but, as I said in June, it came clear to me that the bringing together the gift of monastic discipline with the capacity to  move with creative freedom was in fact, is in fact a manifestation of the churches dual calling to tradition and innovation. As I commented in June this is a perpetual task of the church to hold fast to tradition on one hand and to be open to the spirit blown change on the other." Bishop Allan Gates, Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts,  December 12, 2020, at the ordination of Br. Luke Ditewig, Society of St John the Evangelist.

These words mean so much to me.
